I had a customer that saw a cow horn coyote howler I had engraved for his friend. He called and wanted an engraved howler too. I am not much of an artist and my cheapo Harbor Freight $10.00 engraving tool stinks (just got a different one) and I told him I would do my best. It came out pretty good for that crappy tool and my limited abilities. For as long as it took me, I certainly did not make a profit. But, he was a goodold Christian boy from South Carolina. I just couldn't say no. The howler sounds great and I liked it so much I almost did not want to part with it.

Nice job. I think howlers are a piece of art. I love my howler. I was lucky enough to find someone to make one from one of my own cattle so it has a little meaning to it. The problem is that I can't use it very well. Maybe that's why my grandson is giving me lessons. LOL. It requires a good steady volume of air to get it to sound right. Anybody else out there use a horn howler and how do you make out using it?

I would like to have a horn howler...hint.....hint . If anybody that has cattle could donate one I would really appreciate it. I guess I could buy one but if someone gave me one, in the rough, it would have more sentimental value. |
Let me see what I can do. It's gonna be in the rough alright. Stink and all! I had a deal with the guy who made mine that I would give him X amount of horns and he would make one for me. The problem was that I had to send them to him in Colorado and they were humming. So I put them in two Ziploc bags and sent them on their way.
Now if you sniffed REAL HARD you could still get a whiff of them before I took them to the post office. Of course I had to squirm a little when she asked if it was "perishable". I said, "No" because I figured they were about as bad as they were going to get. He called me and said he got them in good order but that he had to leave them in the garage. I was sure the FBI, CIA, DEA, PETA, SPCA or some other law enforcement agency or animal rights group would be knocking on my door asking to see either my guns or the heads of my cattle. Anyway, no visitors and I got my howler back in a month or so after the beetles got done with it.

Ohhhh that smell..........yup, when I am grinding, drilling, sawing and finishing cow horns, I hate the smell. It's like burning flesh. The worst was the Bison horn. I have made two Bison engraved howlers and man are they rough and hard. I worked two days just to get them from the raw stage to smooth and polished out. A load of wet sanding, starting with 80-grit and working my way up to 1200 grit. Never again. Waaaaay too much work.

I have one I bought from a call maker out in Oregon. I'm sure it's a good howler but I sound like a demented trumpet player with it I think. I've used it on an actual hunting trip.

See why I want one? Seems I'm the only one that don't have one.

That's a sweetie Jason. I am also a believer in the cow horn's sound. I watched those videos of you at the championship when you were working that diaphragm call. You are amazing. I would love to learn how to use that type of call.
