The gun is on it's way. Now I need some help on what kind of factory loads to start with. The gun is a Post-64 Winchester Model 70 in a 22-250 with a 22" barrel. From what I can gather it has a 1:14 twist. Again this is going to be pretty much going to be for coyotes only. I want the max yardage with whatever bullet I use, but everything in the 22-250 line is Greek to me. Thanks for any info.

Hornady Superperformance 50 gr varmint round 4,000 fps. Cheaper than dirt 19.00 a box. This is second hand from a big time shooter. Best he ever shot but all guns are not the same. I made to nice clover leafs with 50 gr hp remington cheep brand. We were shooting at 100 yrd. Looking for new stuff is just to much fun.

Les Johnson likes the 52 gr. Hornady Match BTHP.

$13.62 per 100 @ Powder Valley.

Well, I go my own way.

I'd get THE heaviest bullet I could get in a factory loaded 22.250.
Why? Heavier bullets are almost always more aerodynamic. And a more aerodynamic bullet is more forgiving in the wind. Sheds it's kinetic energy a lot slower too. Shoots flatter too at longer distances.

Also in a given cartridge, a light bullet has a higher initial muzzle velocity. (but looses speed a lot faster than a heavy) using a heavy bullet reduces MV.

A 22.250 is a heck of a barrel burner! Shooting a heavier bullet at a little less MV should stretch barrel life a little, maybe. Also you can be 100% confident with the heavier bullet if a monster buck steps out while your coyote hunting and the buck is legal to take.

But then I rarely follow everyone else.

PS- Mr Johnson is less than wise if he truly endorses a match BTHP on any game. They are designed for paper, and do not do well on meat AT all. Been there done that more than once. Typically when a match bullets hits meat, the paper thin copper peels off in a sheet making a shallow wound &, leaving a little lead cylinder to go straight through the animal like a little needle. Just as I have read, and from two animals I had to track and track and track and ...never again. I believe in clean, ethical kills. Sure, I have made clean kills back when I was trying match bullets, but they were NEVER relaible, so never again.

Your best bet would be to spend that $100 and get set up for loading your own. Then load the very lightest deer bullet you can get. win win win. High Bc, great kills, long range able, less wind drift and yep, good on the deer possibility too...
Not to mention you could choose to use a single base, slightly slower burning powder
(gives the same fps) and stretch your barrel life a good bit to.

Not to argue with you as you surely know better than me (I thought the same and was leaning towards Ballistic Tips) but:

Les Johnson says that the bullet shock from the hollow point match kills the coyote for a quick and ethical kill.

Here's some video:

Tip of the Week at about 12:00 in.

The yotes he shoots with his 22-250 don't seem to go anywhere after being shot.

There's a predator hunting forum that's big on the 17 rem's... they all say (with the 17) to use the target bergers on coyotes because the ballistic tips and "varmint" bullets are intended for ground squirrel sized game...to explosive for coyotes.

Wow, I've been eye ball'n 22-250s for a while now, just didnt know if it was what I needed and wound up get'n a .243 instead, figured it could deal with the wind better and had a some more oomph for a double duty (deer/coyote) work.

But still cant walk by a gun rack and not pick up .22-250, local shop has a Thompson Center Venture with the fluted barrel entirely dressed in camo for less than $700, Giar-own-teed MOA groups. (slobber slobber)

I have been using both the Privi Partizan 55 grain soft points and the Winchester 64 grain Power Points. Both perform well and are pretty consistent. They both have about the same point of impact out to about 250 yards for some reason and even at 400 yards the Wichester 64 grainers require just a few more inches of elevation.

Both of these rounds showed VERY EXPLOSIVE power on plastic 1 gallon water jugs out to about 250 yards. After that, the velocity really starts to fall off with the Winchester's showing a bit more impact result at longer ranges.

The Privi ammo is was dirt cheap at $10 a box when I bought it. The price has gone up a bit like everything else since then. This is good quality ammo in my opinion. Not the pinnacle of the best but very good.

The Winchester was also very good quality ammo in my opinion.
