I've been looking around for an AR 15 for coyote hunting. Obviously the long range consideration it out around here, so I'm not concerned about match or other special barrels.
My friend Dave paid $750 for a M4. I think it was a Rock River Arms, but I may be incorrect on that.
What is a good price for one? I have no clue! They go anywhere from as low as Dave paid to way up over $1200.

If you take a little time you can find a decent 20 inch stainless barrel for around 850.00 I have picked up quite a few in the past shows, most have been in the 650.00 - 850.00 range.

I gave 850 for mine but it's been 5 years or so. 20" stainless match barrel from Predator custom shop. Depends on what you want I guess.

If you have some ability to put one together try this place it has been head space checked and test fired. all for about less than 600 plus ffl dealer charge.

Like I tell everyone, don't buy an off the shelf AR. Have one built, or I'll build it for you.
Pretty much what will make you or break you in an AR is the bore quality, just like bolt guns.
Think of each and every single part that goes into an AR on a quality scale of 1 to 10.
If you buy a cheap AR, you get a cheap #1 grip, a cheap #1 barrel, a # 1 trigger- cheap everything.
If you buy a premium super expensive AR you threw money away. Yes you get a good #10 barrel & a good #10 trigger but you paid for a #10 safety, a #10 sling swivel, and a #10 sheet metal ejection port cover.
Well a grip is pretty much a grip, a safety is either safe or it's not, and the sheet metal ejection port cover is just a piece of well, sheet metal that keeps gunk out of the gun. None of these had anything to do with reliability or accuracy- you threw money away.
So build your own and spend wisely. Build it with a number 10 barrel & trigger, a number 6 upper receiver, a 4 lower receiver a 2 grip, a 1 safety, see- put your precious money in the accuracy department, and save/ be frugal were it's sensless to break the bank!

I don't know if I just got lucky or what?? But, I got the cheapest AR that I could find. It was a Century Arms C-15. It didn't shoot very well with surplus ammo. But, when I started reloading for it, it now shoots sub-MOA groups. Like I said, don't know if I'm just lucky or what.

If you don't mind telling us, what did you pay for it?

I paid $450 with the Simmons AETEC scope and mounts. But that was without the paint job. It had the earth tone stock and forearm with a black grip. So I took it upon myself to do a Krylon Fuzion paint job on it. I'll probably never get rid of it. I have used it out to about 500 yds at the range, and it does pretty good with the reloads.

TresMon, am I correct in thinking that equaling the build quality of an LMT or a KAC means some parts will need hand-fitting? And if that's the case, how do you identify those parts and how do you know how to fit them?
Which leads me to the question of whether you've ever written a DIY tutorial.

That's the trick of an AR. Technically it's not "building" a rifle. It's assembling.
A gunsmith truly "builds" a bolt action rifle. Each part is hand fitted together to assemble the precision whole. There is no "fitting" of AR parts. AR's go together like lego blocks. You merely assemble an AR.
True you may have bought cheap lego blocks or very expensive legos but they go together the same.
The only fitted parts of an AR are 1. some machinist some where had to take a barrel blank and machine it for an AR. But when the end user buys it it is a "drop in" i.e. no fitting required part. 2. the tigger can be slicked up with stones- that is fitting.
No I have not written a DIY, no need there out there on the net.
Thanks,
Tres

I bought a rifle kit from del-ton. It was everything but stripped lower which I bought locally because of FFl's. It is my first ar and it was pretty simple to assemble with directions from ar15.com. The upper was already assembled, head spaced, and test fired from them. The only bad thing about an ar15 is there is too many accessories and you always want something else for it or at least thats my problem.lol

Tres, I'm guessing you spring for a premium barrel, trigger group and BCG. Did I miss anything?
Who are your preferred manufacturers for the "bargain" parts?

I'm happy with my DPMS. I really didn't want to get into the AR-15 black hole but I found someone selling the upper relatively cheap, ($425, 20" bull, only 25 rounds through it), so I just had to build one. Hand loads really are the way to go.
I really can't afford this hobby but:

Got a couple I have put together my self. Saw a new M4. Bush Master at Wal Mart today a little over $800. Never thought I would see Wally World selling M4's.

www.aimsurplus.com/pro...tem=F1SASL this site has stripped lowers for $60. dont know anything about them but i am interested because of the price but i know nothing about building an ar thoughts on these recievers is very welcome. www.tacticalmachining.com/ i have only heard good things about these guys from what I've been reading. i read a post that a guy said the only problem he had was some pits in the finish. they offered to refinish his or sell him another reciever at a discount and invited him to tour the factory. he also said the only ones he owns that fit together any tighter are his colts.
