Well finally got to go hunt a bit today. Felt good to get out in the woods again. Made four stands saw no coyotes but had a good time. All were on WMA today. Took my 17hmr best I could do for a rimfire. First stand was along a creek where three logging roads converge. Started out with bird sounds as I was thinking it looked like a great spot for a Cat. Pretty tight 45 yards here would be a long shot. Stayed on this stand for a god 45 min right at the end used a fox in destress hand call to see if there may be a fox around. Second third and forth stands we're along a power line right of way each were about a mile apart. The first one I have never called before. Walked about 100 yards from where I parked over the hill looking straight down the right of way wind in my face all three of these stands and light. There were coyote droppings every where about 6 piles on my 100 yard walk I was excited. Rabbit in destress calls here stayed about 30 min only thing I impressed was a large woodpecker that came in for a look. Next spot about. Mile away not much sign but looked good. Used a different rabbit call here about 20 min nothing. Decided I had time for one more. About a mile away and it was all howls here got no response and saw nothing. Will try to get back to the second spot soon best looking spot I have called in a while with a lot of sign that there are Yotes using it.

I'm wondering where they have gone for now? The mast crop is so poor this year even the small game aren't where they normally have been. I'm guessing that is the reason why the coyote sightings are really high in the suburbs.
Thanks for sharing! It is great to get out and hunt even if you don't see anything.

I think the coyotes are eating Atchman2's Starlings
Seriously, it can be frustrating when there is sign everywhere but no yotes come to the call. Back in Nazifornia, my hunt partner and I found a spot with a motherload of yote droppings. We had great cover, shade, and the wind was right so we hunkered down and called it. The result: Nada, zero, zilch. We were expecting a coyote stampede and we were really bummed to come up with nothing.
As we walked out, about 400-yards away some dove hunters were working with dogs. Maybe that is what spooked the yotes. Who knows? It's still good to get out.

The reason the small game is down is because.....YOU SHOOT THEM ALL WITH YOUR DARN AIR GUNS. The coyotes are starving out and it's all your fault. They had to go somewhere. That and the fact that Teamroper and 37L1 killed all the yotes around there last year. If you notice the only people killing any yotes are east and west of you guys. LOL Sorry but you brought it upon yourselves. Thats just my theory.

It usually takes a month after deer season closes here to do any good calling coyote. It takes that long for the woods to settle down. I wait until the end of January before I start calling.

I will be back to the one spot for sure. There was droppings every where and the spot I found to set up was awesome. You could see 200 yards which is rare around here. Good spot to hide and the mountain is almost straight off on the left and right 100 yards down the hill behind me is the truck and road so there is 1000's of acres of woods and a power line right of way with old road bed right in frount of me. Looks great and the coyotes should only be able to come from in frount the left and right sides are almost a cliff. Looks great and sounds good as I think it over in my head. Just one of those spots that when you set up you feel like things should be in your favor.

Who are the militia? Are they not ourselves? Is it feared, then, that we shall turn our arms each man gainst his own bosom. Congress have no power to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birthright of an American...[T]he unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or state governments, but, where I trust in God it will ever remain, in the hands of the people. -- Tenche Coxe, The Pennsylvania Gazette, Feb. 20, 17
